Parish/School Events

Catholic Schools Week - February 2010

Grandparents' DayGrandparents’ Day was one of many events during Catholic Schools Week at Assumption. They visited classrooms and were presented with cards and letters thanking them for their love and encouragement. All seats in the church were filled for the weekly school Mass, and Father Tony thanked them for their support of Catholic education. The annual Used Book Sale was crowded as grandchildren selected books that grandparents happily purchased. Other activities included dress-down days, a Bishop Kenny Band concert, food drive, and pep rally. Parents volunteered for many events and spoke to students about their chosen careers.

Flag Ceremony - January 12, 2010

Mr. Carl Conrad, father of Jacob, presented the flag to Mrs. Fuller in Jordan Hall with the entire student body present. A detachment of Bishop Kenny’s NJROTC, under the direction of Master Chief Harris, was present and included five Assumption graduates. The drill team performed with flawless precision to the delight of the students. NJROTC cadets raised the new flag outside in the courtyard while the scouts braved the cold weather and looked on.

All SaintsStudents at all grade levels learned about the saints in preparation for All Saints Day which was celebrated at Assumption November 3rd. Many dressed up as either their favorite saint or their patron saint. A procession of saints preceded the Tuesday school liturgy. Mrs. Fuller, dressed as Saint Katharine Drexel, led the students into the church.

Assumption Soccer League

Assumption Soccer LeagueOver 150 students in grades Pre-K4 through 8th participating in the Assumption Soccer League take over the Assumption soccer fields Friday nights through November. Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends watch as these players compete on age-level appropriate fields under age-level appropriate rules. Coaches of the younger kids shout out encouragement and praise throughout the game. Classmates of older students cheer on their friends. The ASL welcomes all players who have played organized soccer as well as those who are new to the game. Coach Tony Polster organizes the league with parents and older sibling volunteering as coaches and referees. In this league everyone’s a winner!

Family Fun Night Photo Album

Family Fun NightTo the delight of parents, kids at the Assumption School Family Fun Night Friday, April 23rd went home tired and ready for bed. Lynn Parry and her dedicated parent volunteers organized the family event. Kids enjoyed a hamburger/hot dog dinner, snow cones, popcorn, and the main attraction of the evening: a gym full of bouncing play equipment. Many kids also played outside on the soccer field, while parents visited. Family Fun Night raised funds for the school through a silent auction and raffle. The Assumption Family Center, which contains the large gym, was dedicated this past October. The gym is used for school PE classes - minus the Bounce. The children will remember this evening for a long time.

Navy Helicoptor Lands at Assumption

HelicopterWhile over 450 students and staff gathered a safe distance away, a Navy Helicopter from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 42, piloted by CDR Dana R. Gordon and co piloted by LTjg Tim Grant, landed on the soccer field at Assumption Catholic School. The audience learned about the mission of the squadron from AWRCS Bruce Hinschberger, father of 1st grader Bryce and 8th grader Matthew. Flying ahead of Navy ships, a helicopter crew is on the lookout for enemy ships and submarines. The squadron also provides support in capturing drug runners, modern day pirates, and search and rescue operations.

Students were given a close-up view of the helicopter. Many were able to sit in the pilot seat and push the many buttons and controls; while LTjg Chris Hinson and AWR2 Matt Owens reassured no harm would be done to the aircraft. A fire truck from Fire Station #12 stood by in case of an emergency.

This squadron, with the name Proud Warriors, lives up to their motto: "EVERYBODY SUCCEEDS, PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY!"
