Celebrating the Class of 2010
The class of 2010 completed their years at Assumption with many events in addition to Commencement. A baccalaureate Mass was celebrated on May 18th and included the Candle – Rose ceremony with 8th graders symbolically handing the Assumption legacy and tradition over to 7th graders. The annual Katie Caples luncheon was held in honor of the graduates, and the Katie Caples’ Scholarship was announced during the graduation ceremony. This year’s recipient was Taylor Shami who will be attending Bishop Kenny High School in the fall.
Confirmation - May 1, 2010
Assumption Confirmation Candidates were “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” May 1st. Pastor Father Fred Parke presented the candidates to Bishop Victor Galeone who then imposed hands and anointed the 39 candidates. Preparation for the sacrament is a two year program under the direction of the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother and Lu Tablante, middle school Religion teacher.
Family Karaoke Night - April 23, 2010
Aspiring American Idol Stars entertained family and classmates at the Karaoke Night held at Assumption Catholic School this past April. The event was a fundraiser for the Music department to help defray the cost of the upcoming musical: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Dr. and Mrs. Toledo, parents of Lauren, set up and ran the karaoke machine with additional help from their sons, Almond and Michael. The event, which included dinner, was organized by music teacher, Heather Wakefield, who is directing a cast of over 50 students for the upcoming May musical.
Assumption Cub Scouts Pack 106 Service Project - March 24, 2010
The Wolf Den of Pack 106 (2nd grade) recently completed a service project on
the grounds of Assumption school. Before its regularly scheduled den
meeting on March 24, the ten members of the Wolf Den along with its den
master and some parents assembled at the front of the campus. Armed with
garbage bags and gloves, the scouts canvassed the school and picked up
litter remaining from parish activities or blown onto the property as a
result of the breezy conditions of the past few days. This service project
was part of the achievements and requirements that the cubs have been
working on throughout the year to earn their next badge. The cubs were
diligent in their project and took great pride in tidying up their school.
Distinguished Alumni Award Presented to Mr.Jim Towey
“Play! Pray! Stay!” This was the message delivered by Jim Towey to Assumption School parents, staff, and students after a ceremony presenting him with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Towey graduated from Assumption and Bishop Kenny and shared many memories of his years in grade school as part of his inspirational remarks. A graduate of Florida State University College of Law, Mr. Towey represented Mother Teresa for 12 years. He is presently president of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. Hugh Durham, former basketball coach at Florida State, Georgia, and Jacksonville University, accompanied by his wife, attended the ceremony along with former classmates.
Lenten Retreat - March 23, 2010
In preparation for Holy Week, students attended a Lenten retreat directed by the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother. The retreat began with a procession in church that presented the instruments of Christ’s crucifixion. Students viewed age appropriate Lenten themed movies, wrote personal reflections of Christ’s passion, made crafts, and prepared and received the sacrament of Reconciliation. The final event was Mass followed by student led Stations of the Cross in the church.
Catholic Schools Week - February 2010
Grandparents’ Day was one of many events during Catholic Schools Week at Assumption. They visited classrooms and were presented with cards and letters thanking them for their love and encouragement. All seats in the church were filled for the weekly school Mass, and Father Tony thanked them for their support of Catholic education. The annual Used Book Sale was crowded as grandchildren selected books that grandparents happily purchased. Other activities included dress-down days, a Bishop Kenny Band concert, food drive, and pep rally. Parents volunteered for many events and spoke to students about their chosen careers.
Flag Ceremony - January 12, 2010
Assumption Boy Scout Pack 106 donated a flag to the school at a flag ceremony January 12th. Mr. Carl Conrad, father of Jacob, presented the flag to Mrs. Fuller in Jordan Hall with the entire student body present. A detachment of Bishop Kenny’s NJROTC, under the direction of Master Chief Harris, was present and included five Assumption graduates. The drill team performed with flawless precision to the delight of the students. NJROTC cadets raised the new flag outside in the courtyard while the scouts braved the cold weather and looked on.
Advent Retreat - December 8, 2009
The Sister Servants of the Home of the Mother and candidates for the order held an Advent Retreat on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The retreat began with Mass followed by a procession and dedication of the school to Mary. Other activities followed after Mass with the day culminating in a Rosary Procession in Jordan Hall.
Science Fair November 11, 2009
Since the beginning of September, middle school students have been busy researching topics and using the Scientific Method for the presentation of Science Fair projects. Students gave oral presentations to parents, teachers, and students. They worked under the direction of Mrs. Lisa Sanders, the middle school science teacher. These photos are just a sampling of the many projects.
All Saints Celebration November 3, 2009
Students at all grade levels learned about the saints in preparation for All Saints Day which was celebrated at Assumption November 3rd. Many dressed up as either their favorite saint or their patron saint. A procession of saints preceded the Tuesday school liturgy. Mrs. Fuller, dressed as Saint Katharine Drexel, led the students into the church.
Assumption Soccer League
Over 150 students in grades Pre-K4 through 8th participating in the Assumption Soccer League take over the Assumption soccer fields Friday nights through November. Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends watch as these players compete on age-level appropriate fields under age-level appropriate rules. Coaches of the younger kids shout out encouragement and praise throughout the game. Classmates of older students cheer on their friends. The ASL welcomes all players who have played organized soccer as well as those who are new to the game. Coach Tony Polster organizes the league with parents and older sibling volunteering as coaches and referees. In this league everyone’s a winner!
