Catholic Schools Week - Jan./Feb. 2012

The annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week began with a focus on vocations as Seminarian Bryan Holtz shared his vocation story with all students. Students enjoyed the dress down days throughout the week, especially the crazy socks, tie, and hat day. Service projects included collections of canned goodes for Catholic Charities and doantions to the Burmese community. The boy scouts presented a flag during a ceremony honoring America with entertainment by Bishop Kenny’s JNROTC drill team and drum ensemble. Grandparents visited classrooms Friday reminiscing about times their children were students. Along with all the fun, the week focused attention on the contribution Catholic Schools and the rich traditions at Assumption Catholic School.

First Graders Present Nativity Story

First grade students reinacted the Nativity Story for proud parents, staff, and students after the school Mass the week before Christmas break. The cast practiced many weeks and their hard work was evident in their presentation. The angels sang sweetly. The animals guarded Baby Jesus. Mary, Joseph, shepards, wise men, and the rest of the students performed their parts like pros helping us all remember the true reason for this blessed season.

All Saints Celebration 2011

All Saints CelebrationAssumption students were 'saints in the making' as they honored their patron and favorite saints this November during the annual All Saints Celebration. The 'saints' processed through the courtyard before entering church for the school liturgy. In preparation for the day, students studied the life of their chosen saint and shared what they learned with other students in Religion class.

Fall Festival - October 8, 2011

Face PaintingIn spite of the rain, it was "food, fun, and fellowship" at the annual Assumption Parish Fall Festival. All organizations of the church and school participated in planning and implementing the evening's events which included dinner, children's games, face painting, inflatables, and more. A community spirit prevailed as adults and children enjoyed the evening’s entertainment and camaraderie. This 2011 Fall Festival contributed to our parish collective memory. Were you there?

Welcome to the New School Year - August 2011

Fresh faces mingled with familiar faces as students and staff began the 2011-2012 school year. An increase in enrollment and the addition of a Pre-K 2 year old class followed a busy summer of preparation by staff and volunteers. Many of the classrooms have a fresh coat of paint and decorated with special themes to create a warm and welcoming enviornment for students. The ACS community is anticipating its 88th year of excellence and faith in action.

Lenten Retreat - April 12, 2011

In preparation for Holy Week, students attended a Lenten retreat directed by the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother. The retreat began with a procession in church that presented the instruments of Christ’s crucifixion and Stations of the Cross. During the day students viewed age appropriate Lenten themed movies, wrote personal reflections of Christ’s passion, made crafts and posters, and received the sacrament of Reconciliation. The day ended with the celebration of the Mass led by Father Fred.

Confirmation - April 2, 2011

“How do you spell Love?” That was the question Bishop Victor Galeone challenged candidates with at the Confirmation ceremony held at Assumption Church. The answer: T-I-M-E! He went on to stress that if we love God we will want to spend time with Him especially by attending Mass on Sunday. A reception in Jordan Hall followed the Mass. Parents and relatives of the candidates included several alumni of Assumption School. Preparation for the sacrament is a two year program under the direction of the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother, middle school Religion teacher Lu Tablante, and Cher Chilton.

Cub Scout Pinewood Derby - March 12, 2011

The paint jobs were slick, the wheels true and aligned, and the axles were overflowing with graphite. Congratulations to Assumption School's Pack 106 for a fun filled and exciting Pinewood Derby held in Kohls Hall on March 12. The Cub Scouts truly put in a fantastic effort this year and pack leaders are proud of the turnout at the event and volunteer efforts of each of the scout families.

The Pinewood Derby is one of many activities organized throughout the school year by the Cub Scouts. The father of the Pinewood Derby®, Donald Murphy, described his vision for the event to Scouting magazine in 1999: “I wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer parent-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition.” As Cub Scouts learn the skill of good sportsmanship, they are better able to recognize and appreciate the new skills they’ve acquired, to show respect to all those involved, and to experience the fun and excitement of competition.
