Religious Education
Since Assumption is a Catholic School, spirituality and faith formation is the heart of all that we do each day as we partner with parents who are the first educators of their children. The school assists in the development of children in the Catholic faith, but parents are the first religious educators and have a duty to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days and fully participate in the sacramental life of the Church.
Students begin each day with Morning Prayer and students in all grades have daily instruction in the Catholic faith. The student body attends Mass every Tuesday and on Holy Days of Obligation. Parents often join their children for these school liturgies. Middle School students lead the Stations of the Cross for the school throughout the Lenten season, and during Holy Week the students enact The Living Stations. Students in grades 3 through 8 have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis.
Prayer is a very important part of student life at Assumption. Students in all grades often visit the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for Perpetual Adoration thus learning the power of prayer at a very early age.
Students in the second grade are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. In addition to the daily instruction of the children, second grade parents participate in special programs which help with the sacramental preparation. Many parents discover that these special programs strengthen and renew their own faith as they prepare their children for First Penance and First Holy Communion.
Preparation for Confirmation begins in seventh grade and continues in eighth grade. Students prepare during daily religion classes and Saturday retreats. Students complete the required number of community service hours and are confirmed sometime in February or March of their 8th grade year.
In October, 2006, Assumption Parish and School welcomed the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother. The sisters assist teachers with religious instruction in the classroom and plan and lead retreats during Advent and Lent.
Assumption Catholic School strongly believes and participates in social justice projects at every grade level. Students learn the value of personal sacrifice and service through acts of charity. Catholic Charities, The Women’s Help Center and Dreams Come True are a few of the organizations supported by donations and service hours.
