Mrs. Henderson Receives Student Recognition
Being recognized for excellence by a student is the most rewarding moment for a teacher. Mrs. Alicia Henderson, Middle School Literature teacher, recently received such recognition. A sixth grade student, Zach, nominated Mrs. Henderson for First Coast News Teacher of the Week.
Deanna Fene, co-anchor of the 7pm news on ABC25 for the Jacksonville, Florida First Coast News television channel, taped a news segment featuring Mrs. Henderson with a 6th grade Literature class scheduled for broadcast December 17, 2008.
Mrs. Henderson chooses books that are interesting to young readers and leads class and small group discussions to develop understanding of the literary elements: character, plot, conflict, irony, genre, point of view, and imagery. She knows her middle school students’ reading levels and interests and is able to suggest books for independent reading. It is not unusual to see these middle school students reading during lunch and talking about books.
Zach nominated Mrs. Henderson because she is his favorite teacher and says students in his sixth grade class love reading.
In addition to teaching, Mrs. Henderson sponsors the Middle School Running Club at Assumption which meets several days a week after school throughout the school year. The Running Club also takes part in local running events.
The Assumption Catholic School community congratulates Mrs. Henderson on this well deserved recognition.
